Twin Demons of Malnutrition: Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia

By Hakeem Alexander

(Exercising Your Mind) Sometimes I feel like such an incredible fool. Some of my haphazard experiments have been at great fault. I have gone back over several of my rogue, amateur scientific, self-experimental protocols after making a few simple corrections and have isolated what may be a major contribution to the ill-health experiences many people encounter: glucose imbalances. These are hypoglycemia, which is low blood-sugar; and hyperglycemia, which is high blood sugar. High blood sugar is also known as diabetes.

The first review I conducted was of my research on hypoglycemia, which mainly drew on the work of Dr. John Kappas, Dr. Gary Null, and the work of the physicians and researches who authored the book “Total Nutrition: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need – From The Mount Sinai School Of Medicine”. This was from my paper Hypoglycemia

I began this review because it came to my attention that many of my mental and physical health issues were being resolved because I corrected my blood sugar imbalances through corrective nutrition. I also call this “orthomolecular” nutrition, from the 1968 paper published by Linus Pauling in the journal Science.

Further motivation for this review came from my desire to be totally free from any drugs or medicines of any kind. I will use a natural, homeopathic or metaphysical remedy if I am truly ill, but I desire to be free of chronic medicaments. Specifically, I became dependent on marijuana to alleviate night-terrors that were accompanied by sleep-paralysis, sleep-apnea (not breathing), and hallucinations.

I simply followed an alternating low-sugar or zero-sugar diet for one-week. Then I ate sugar only after I had a big salad (8 to 10 ounces) of mostly raw kale, followed by high-quality protein, such as whole eggs scrambled with cheese, fish or chicken. Again, I ate sugar AFTER I had the salad and protein.

I quickly re-discovered that this slows the absorption of sugar into my blood. Therefore, I was not feeling a sugar-high, or hyperglycemia, my pancreas did not rush to shuttle insulin into my blood to get the sugar/glucose into my cells, thereby causing my blood-sugar to crash. The blood-sugar crash is hypoglycemia. When that happened before I would very quickly be hungry from the crash immediately afterwards. I also experienced very disturbing headaches and severe mood-swings; going from high-spirited with sugar and then depressed and grumpy following the crash.

This also caused me to re-examine my self-experiment on water and dehydration. Instead of drinking water I drank organic fruit juices and teas. I thought at the time my head-aches were caused by dehydration. The headaches were in fact, alleviated by re-hydrating immediately after drinking water, but I suspected even then it was primarily caused by hypoglycemia. The water may have simply diluted the sugar, but of that I am not certain. This paper can be found at

Next, this gave me reason to believe that my Food Awareness Subjective Testing protocol should be questioned as well. This is because there was a lot of organic sugar involved. I decided my results there too were tainted by the sinister sweetness.

Finally, I looked again at my GMO No, No’s Paper and figured sugar into that equation.

My results when comparing the effects of sugar and re-doing all of this work was not too surprising. Most of my metabolic symptoms, mental disturbances and physical discomforts did not re-appear when I rebalanced my blood-sugar using a variation of Dr. john Kappas’ “Hypoglycemic Diet”, which is a corrective protocol from people suffering from low-blood sugar and its many disturbing symptoms.

After repeating each of these experiments, I did not experience the severity of symptoms as when I was not factoring in the correct consumption of sugar.

My Body’s Many Cries for Water.
When I removed the fruit juice and drank tea instead of water, no problem. When I replaced water with coffee – big problem. And when I replaced water with fruit-juice, the negative impact was severe due to low-blood sugar crashes that inevitably followed high blood-sugar from consuming so much sugary, organic juice. It must also be added that when I did not drink any fluids at all, the symptoms were just as severe as with sugary-juices.

Food Awareness Subjective Testing (F.A.S.T.).
There were a few non-organic foods that disagreed with me. However, I experienced equal metabolic and digestive discomfort with processed, organic, junk-food types like certain snack chips.

GMO No, No’s
The results in eating organic foods instead of non-organic foods to avoid GMOs was pretty close to the F.A.S.T. program. I do not know what long-term effects of GMOs are, but I did not experience any significant discomfort just because a food may be contaminated with GMOs. It must be noted that most of the GMO ingredients are found in processed junk food type snacks like chips and cookies.

The most significant health improvements came when I lowered or eliminated sugar consumption on most days. The primary benefits however, followed when I consumed sugar in a way that would slow its absorption into my blood-stream, while still providing me with the energy I require to sustain my proper physical functions.

It gives me new insight into perhaps why desserts are “traditionally” eaten AFTER a meal of vegetables and protein. The benefits have been many, and include;

  • Better sleep without frequent night-terrors with paralysis, apnea and hallucinations.
  • A 15 pound decrease in body weight.
  • A significant increase in muscular strength and power.
  • Lowered heart-rate and blood-pressure.
  • Clear thinking and memory recall.
  • No more mood-swings
  • Elimination of head-aches
  • Significantly reduced sugar cravings
  • Comfortable hunger signals rather than painful hunger pains.
  • No more dependence on marijuana to medicate symptoms.
  • No craving for drinking alcohol.

I could extend this list further but it is not necessary. I have clearly demonstrated to myself that improper use of sugar, including fruit and fruit juices can cause many problems and masquerade as symptoms of other diseases if not carefully monitored. I hope that my foolishness and eventual enlightenment on this issue will be helpful to others as well. I will be following up with more sensible research as my scientific reasoning advances.
